My Introduction to Breathwork

Writer: Lorna GrahamLorna Graham

I stumbled upon breathwork by pure chance; I didn't seek it out—it found me. It was a clear sign that the universe looks out for us when we need it most. I received a message about a free trial for a "gut detox." Always intrigued by new health modalities and treatments, I decided to give it a try.

As I sat in front of the facilitator, he asked me what I hoped to achieve from the session. I found myself opening up about my struggles with stress and anxiety. He then asked me to lie on the bed and guided me through the session, which turned out to be an introductory breathwork session. I walked in feeling like a complete mess and walked out feeling stronger and more confident. That's when I knew I had to share this practice with others who were struggling in the same way I had.

Unbeknownst to me, I was in the early stages of perimenopause. Part of me felt relieved because I had feared I might be developing Alzheimer's or dementia! When I finally realized that my symptoms were related to perimenopause, I felt a huge sigh of relief. At least now, I knew what I was dealing with.

I didn’t feel like myself at all. My body felt achy and incredibly heavy; even though I was still slim, my middle was starting to fill out and change shape. I wasn’t sleeping well and felt exhausted all the time. I would get hot and clammy, which caused embarrassment, especially at the gym, making me reluctant to work out. However, I could handle most of these changes. What I found unbearable was the brain fog and the debilitating stress and anxiety. I couldn’t remember anything, and it severely impacted my work. My boss kept sending me aggressive emails, following up on things I had promised to deliver but hadn’t. Understandably, she was frustrated.

Once I figured out what was happening, I informed her about my situation. However, to say she lacked empathy and understanding would be an understatement. Things only got worse from there. That's when breathwork became my savior. I use it daily to manage various situations. There are many techniques tailored for different stressors and ailments.

I know firsthand what it means to survive. I’ve recovered from cancer and understand the debilitating effects of stress and anxiety. I’ve experienced the fight-or-flight response triggered by workplace bullying. I’ve navigated perimenopause naturally without resorting to HRT. And most importantly, I’ve discovered the incredible power of breathwork and its tremendous benefits. Now, I want to share this knowledge with the world!
